Embracing Strength, Resilience, and Transformation
As I sit down to share my fitness journey, I’m overwhelmed with gratitude for how far I’ve come and the lessons I continue to learn. I’m now five weeks into a focused commitment to better health and wellness, and I feel compelled to share my story—as it may resonate with many who have faced similar challenges.
With a history of wearing knees down from years of active sports, horseback riding, running, and my beloved basketball during my younger days, I’ve faced knee issues head-on. After multiple surgeries, including a complete reconstruction of my right knee way back in 1983, I’ve learned to navigate the physical limitations that often accompany an active life.
However, as of today, I am celebrating my 13th knee-specific workout with Michael Calloway at the Canaan Valley Spa and Wellness Center. The improvements I’m experiencing are nothing short of miraculous! I can feel the strength returning to my knees—less pain, and even some pain-free days! Tasks like walking up and down stairs used to feel daunting, yet today, I tackled three sets of 10 squats without any assistance. This progress is more than just numbers; it’s about my newfound confidence and sense of empowerment.
At 59 years old, every year and every moment of wear and tear on my body tells a story—stories of adventures lived and memories made. I hold deep gratitude for my life thus far, and I’m eager to continue chasing new adventures, playing with my grandson, riding my horses, and exploring the breathtaking trails of Canaan Valley. More importantly, I aim to live my life feeling as pain-free as possible. By the end of March, I hope to feel great in the bathing suit I plan to wear as I spend my annual month in St Croix, USVI.
This journey began a little over a year ago when I found myself carrying around 35 extra pounds. I tried everything—countless diets and exercise programs—but nothing seemed to work. I felt defeated and burnt out after years spent in gyms, and I knew it was time to seek a new approach. After discussions with my PCP, I realized I needed to consider options that would really support my health, especially as I navigated the ups and downs of perimenopause and menopause.
After much research, I decided to try a GLP-1 medication. Initially, I kept it to myself, unsure of how to share this choice. But as I began to experience real results—less appetite, fewer cravings for sweets, and tangible weight loss—I felt ready to open up about my journey. It’s been liberating to connect with so many other women who are embarking on similar paths, sharing our experiences and supporting one another.
In addition to the GLP-1 medication, I started using peptide supplements from MAKE Wellness, which have been game-changers in my health journey. They help me feel strong, hydrated, and focused—essential for balancing life’s many responsibilities. Now, at 5’8″ and weighing 152 pounds, I’ve lost that stubborn 35 pounds, along with a few extra as a bonus. I’ve seen my body transform, and with it, my confidence has blossomed. I chuckle at the thought of “being skinny” or fitting the social media ideal, because I know I will never fit that mold.
Instead, I celebrate my body for what it is—a vessel that has carried me through many beautiful experiences and will continue to do so. I embrace my linebacker shoulders proudly, knowing they help me with the physical demands of daily life.
Investing in my health and wellness has been both a financial and emotional commitment, but it feels worth it. I am all in! If you find yourself seeking support on a similar journey, please feel free to reach out. I would love to help in any way I can, and I encourage you to make choices that honor your health and well-being.
Together, let’s celebrate every step of the journey, embracing the strength and resilience that comes with it!
