What is Energy Work?

I do energy work with individuals all the time, but what does that actually mean?

Energy is defined as the strength and vitality required for sustained physical or mental activity.  It is also defined as an adequate or abundant amount of power.  Humans are made up of energy; we are vibrating, energetic beings.  When our energy is out of balance or low, it effects every aspect of life.  Engaging in energy work on your own or with a practitioner is an effective way to find balance in your life. In my practice, I address energy through a few related but unique modalities.  Let’s take a closer look.

1. Reiki

Reiki is a Japanese word for life force.  This modality of energy work is a technique that taps into the unlimited supply of life force energy to improve health and enhance the quality of life.  Utilizing a hands-off approach, I become a bridge to the life force energy and transfer that energy into the individual’s field.

The Reiki energy will go where it is needed for each client, and my hands are guided by my intuition.  Reiki utilizes the concept of entrainment which is the tendency for two oscillating bodies to lock into phase so that they vibrate in harmony.  During a Reiki session, the practitioner and the client come together energetically.  This raises the vibrational level and assists with the healing of the client.  In nearly every situation, the person vibrating at a lower frequency will increase vibrations to meet the person vibrating at a higher frequency – the client will match the practitioner.

2. Shamanic Healing

Shamanism is an ancient collection of traditions based on the act of voluntarily accessing and connecting to the non-ordinary states for wisdom and healing.  It is the most ancient healing practice known to man, dating back over 100,000 years.  The word shaman comes from the Siberian Tungus tribe and means “spiritual healer” or “one who sees in the dark.”

A person becomes a shaman when she or he has obtained these three abilities:

  1. Voluntarily entering altered states of consciousness and maintaining full control while maneuvering in and out of those states (meditative journeying)
  2. Being a mediator between the worlds; being able to articulate the needs and wisdom of the spirit world to the physical world, and vice versa
  3. Creating and maintaining balance of humankind, nature and the spirit realm
Shamanic healing is an effective modality for achieving balance in the energy field, while also releasing ideas, beliefs, and habits that are no longer serving the individual.  A client can transform traumatic events on the energetic level with very little discussion or processing in the analytic brain.

3. Meditation and Breathwork Practices

  1. Meditation is a practice in which an individual uses a technique such as mindfulness or focusing the mind on a particular object, thought, or activity, to train attention and awareness, and to achieve mental and emotional clarity. Meditation is often referred to as journeying.  Meditation can be done with a guide leading the journey or on your own.  One can also find effective guided meditations online.  To develop a personal meditation practice, it is recommended you work with a trained guide.  Practicing meditation is not difficult; it simply requires a person to be open, committed, and ready to experience a deeper level of knowing and awareness.
  2. Breathwork is a conscious, controlled breathing done especially for relaxation, meditation, or therapeutic purpose. There are many types of breath work, from simple practices to much longer, complex sequence breathing.  Breath is one of the ways to transform energy by releasing that which no longer serves via the exhale.  The inhale draws in fresh energy, building new prana or chi – the life force.  When we have new, energized life force, we have much more clarity in all aspects of our lives.
For more information on these three types of Energy Work, reach out to me for a consultation or to schedule an appointment.  I am happy to provide additional details and resources to help you learn more.  If you feel called to any one of these, pay attention.  It is your intuition guiding you to what you may need in this moment in time.
